Pre-Season Outlook
Edwards saw a new career high in red-zone usage last year with more carries inside the five-yard line (23) than he saw in the previous four years combined. The fact that Edwards turned those 23 carries into 12 rushing touchdowns shows that Edwards was winning the battle with defenses, even if his rushing average was just 4.1 yards per carry. Edwards will never be much of a pass catcher and the specter of eventual decline looms now that he's 29 years old, but in 2023 at least Edwards clearly still had his fastball. The Chargers need Edwards as their lead power runner in 2024 and, while he might not be able to do much more than eek out 15 most weeks, he has been productive with such workloads previously in the NFL. With that said, J.K. Dobbins and Kimani Vidal figure to steal nearly all of the pass-catching work to be had in the Chargers backfield.
